Olanski Cup
Wednesday, 02 January 2013

In mid December the early morning squashers at the LSRC got together for the first annual Olanski Cup.  A fine gold trophy with bragging rights for the balance of the year was at stake and the combatants were up for the challenge.

First however they had to find parking spots as they arrived at the club for this lunch time event and were quite surprised to see the club full of lunchtime members.  Quite a drastic change from the empty parking lot they normally use at 6:30 am.

Not fazed by the parking inconvenience our players, Bernie Olanski; Fraser Wilson; Chad Dawson; Brian Mills; Scott Gilfillan and John O'Driscoll set out to do battle.  The round robin event was set up as games of 21 with each player completing five games in the preliminary round and each game winner receiving one point for the win.  The preliminary round ended with a Championship division which consisted of the three top point getters  and a  Consolation division of the remaining players.  Top point getter in each division got a bye while the other two players had another single game of 21 to determine who played the preliminary round champ.

After several beers and much good natured bantering among the combatants the eventual overall winner was Fraser Wilson while Brian Mills won the consolation event. Fraser was the epitome of modesty that afternoon and only stayed till midnight at the club offering a detailed description of his victory to anyone who happened by.  The victory did come at a price however as Fraser required treatment several days later when the champ notified all his opponents by email as he was undergoing acupuncture treatment for a slight meniscus tear in one of his knees.  Needless to say each of his opponents sent flowers and a get well card.  Fraser assured one and all that he would be ready to defend his title next year.
